Welcome to the next generation of digital SLR photography-the Canon EOS 40D. The EOS 40D combines Canon's tremendous know-how in both the digital and photographic worlds, creating a camera that not only does everything one would expect of a traditional digital SLR, but one that incorporates staggering leaps forward in technological innovation. With new features like Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning System, Live View Function, a more powerful DIGIC III Image Processor, plus a 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, a 3.0-inch LCD monitor and more, the EOS 40D elevates digital photography to new heights, enhancing the shooting experience, and delivering images one could only expect from a Canon.
Included with your rental:
-40D camera body
-Canon BP-511a battery
-Canon CG-580 battery charger
-Factory neck strap
-SanDisk 2GB Compact Flash card
(Note: this body is compatible with all of the Canon lenses that we carry.)

We have a 30D so this was a nice test for us. We took this camera to 14 cities in 19 days and although we tended to favor the 5d we rented at the same time, the 40D performed very well.
It's hard to write either a stunning review or a pan of this camera because it's "good." The camera does its job, it's way better than the 30D but in the end, it's not a 5d or a 1d, which it's not supposed to be.
I think of the 40d as a great way to get into the Canon line - learn it, explore it, and hopefully love it and continue shooting Canon. ;) |

Superb camera for auto racing action photography,

I was absolutely blown away by the features included in the 40D. This camera body was made with high speed action in mind.
Imagine if you will focusing on a group of 32 vintage Trans Am race cars hitting full throttle at the green flag of a road race, accelerating from 70mph to nearly 150mph, come down the main straight towards your shooting position. I was able to get 17 continuous shots covering the entire group of cars, then turn and continue shooting as they passed me to go into the first corner. I fired off 24 shots in a matter of seconds and the camera never paused for a moment to write to the memory card. When I played the photos back on my computer it nearly looked like a video stream rather than individual photos.
I was shooting large JPG because I didn't want to run out of card space too quickly. The camera was simple to get used to quickly and was a thrill to use.
I haven't had the pleasure of trying a Mark 1D iii yet, but after using the 40D, I really don't know if I would need to go up to the much more expensive body.
Renting from Pro Photo Rental was a pleasure and I have all ready set up my next rental with them. |
Canon EOS 40D Body - A Winner!,

I've used a 10D, and a 20D extensively and a 1D Mk iii briefly during the last 4 years. I rented the 40D to help me decide between buying it and buying the 1D Mk iii ($1200 vs. $4300.) How close is 40D to the 1D Mk ii regarding the functions and features I'd use? How is image quality, ease of use, ergonomics?
The 40D delivers what I need as a nature photographer: Its bursts are fast and more than adequate for getting a bird in flight while shooting RAW + small JPEG. Images are crisp and color balance is excellent, I used in mainly in Manual mode with a fast 400mm prime lens stopped way down and very fast shutter speed. At ISO 800 there was minimal noise in the darkest shadows. At ISO 400 there was virtually none. It's shutter lag is much less than on my 20D. The larger LCD screen on the back is a pleasure. Controls are easy to memorize and use to make a setting change mid-sequence. It has a well-paced AF-lock button. Using it vertically is a bit difficult (as it is with all the xxD models) but can be made easy with a battery grip (but that adds weight). The sensor cleaning works well: No dust at all in spite of many lens changes over 2 days of 2-3 hrs of AM and 3-4 hrs of PM shooting each day, some of which was on the side of dirt road that had light traffic, some of which made a white cloud.
The 40D would make a very good nature, landscape, wedding and studio camera for a pro or a serious pro-am. (I've never done sports.) I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because it's not a 1Ds Mk iii. However it gives a photographer more than 2/3 of the benchmark 1D Mk iii at less than 1/3 the price. It's an excellent value if you don't want or don't need everything that the 1D Mk iii offers. If you're ready to upgrade from whatever you're using now and want to stay in the under-$1500 category, I'd definitely rent one and use it for a few days before deciding. It'll sell itself to you.
(I'm a serious amateur who sells prints when possible, I have 4 years of experience with Canon DSLRs.)
PS - This company, ProPhotoRental, is a pleasure to deal with and its rentals are priced right. The 40D was my first rental here. I'll be back. |
